Advanced Strength Properties
Model notes: Slope excavation in a complex geological formation in which andesitic lava overlies marine sediments. The potential failure surfaces can be limited to the andesite or can pass through the underlying marine sediments. Small changes in material properties can cause the most critical failure surfaces to shift from one mode to the other.
Program features: Non-circular surfaces. User-defined shear/normal functions for material strengths. Anisotropic functions for material strengths.

Retaining Wall with Large Bypassing Failure Surface
Model notes: A slope in soil overlying rock. Excavations at the toe have been stabilized by means of cantilevered retaining walls (hi-lighted by the yellow circle. Use View Larger Image to see the details). The analysis shows that, while these retaining walls stabilize the soil near the toe, larger failure surfaces can bypass this reinforcement.
Program features: Hoek-Brown material strengths for concrete retaining walls.

Anchor Block for a Suspension Bridge
Model notes: Analysis of suspension bridge anchor block with loads applied to represent cable anchor load and sheave block reaction. These loads are increased progressively to generate failure of the system and to determine the overall factor of safety. In the example shown the load factor is 6 times the actual cable load. The rock mass is bedded sandstone and the two units are defined as anisotropic materials.
Program features: Infinite strength material for modeling the anchor block. Double set of slope limits to constrain slip surface generation. Line loads to model external loading. Anisotropic functions for material strengths.
