SUMMER 2011
Phase2 Joint Network Verification
It has been a longstanding misconception in the geomechanics community that the Finite Element Method (FEM) is not well suited to the analysis of blocky or jointed rock masses, and that Discrete Element Methods (DEM) are the only option.

It has recently been demonstrated that the Finite Element Method (FEM) with explicit representation of discontinuities, using Goodman joint elements (JFEM), is a highly credible alternative to Discrete Element Methods (DEM), for a class of blocky or jointed rock problems. Read more.
Top Projects Geodudes Geotechnical Engineers Write Top Project Proposal Prof. Pradel at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a veteran user of the Rocscience Academic Bundle, has for the last five years integrated software modelling using Slide and Phase2 into his Advanced Geotechnical Design course. The project submitted by the Geodudes Geotechnical Engineers of Prof. Pradel’s class got top marks.

National Cooperative of Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report #611 on the Seismic Analysis and Design of Retaining Walls, Buried Structures, Slopes and Embankments, uses the Rocscience Slide program for its slope stability analyses. In particular, the document describes the GLE approach for determining the seismic active pressure on a retaining wall using Slide. Download a free copy of the report.
