At Work The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is the national body in Canada that strategically invests in the country’s scientific and technological capabilities. To stimulate student interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering, and to encourage graduate studies and research careers, NSERC offers Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA). Gabriela Nuta, now entering the Master of Engineering program at the University of Toronto, won one of these awards to work at Rocscience this past summer. Gabriela worked on testing Settle3D by creating tutorials and verification files for the upcoming release. She also helped the developers by researching various topics that were of interest to them. She updated and added verification files for other Rocscience software such as Phase2 and Slide. She learned how companies develop, test and market software and subsequently provide technical support to their clients. She also worked on various technical support questions that were received from clients during the summer, which provided her with the opportunity to see how Rocscience software is used by professional engineers.Gabriela has returned to the University of Toronto to work on a Master of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering. Since she hopes to one day work in industry, her experience at Rocscience was very valuable. |
