Using a Reference Stage in Settle3D - This software offers the ability to set a reference stage so that you may see the relative effects of a given load. For example, you may wish to put down a layer of fill as a preload. At a later time you will construct a building on top. You only wish to see the settlement of the building, not the pre-load plus the building. In this case you can set a reference stage to get the desired information. The procedure is straight-forward when there is no time-dependent consolidation. However, when time-dependent consolidation is activated, you must be a bit more careful when you set the reference stage. (Settle3D 1.007, 05/08)

The latest update to Settle3D adds the ability to account for buoyancy effects. As soil layers and embankments settle below the water table, the loading stress will decrease due to buoyancy. If these buoyancy effects are not taken into account, then the settlement will be overestimated. This article demonstrates how to account for Buoyancy in Settle3D. (Settle3D 1.006, 02/08)
